Thanksgiving is a time to reflect on everything we're grateful for. Sometimes it can feel heavy though. The preparations and excitement...grocery store workers asking if customers are "ready for the holidays." For many, today it is a reminder of loved ones who've died, family members who are ill and won't be getting better. For some, they are newly divorced wondering how they will make it through the holiday without their children. If the joy is gone this holiday season and you have had recent changes in your life, you may be grieving the way you thought your life was going to be. We tend to reflect on previous holidays often with fond memories. Knowing that things have changed.... knowing that they will never be the same can be really hard.
Keeping traditions alive that honor those good memories can help. Remember that grief really is love with nowhere to go. You get to decide how to spend your day today. Focusing on the people in your life that you can love helps. If going feels like too much, you have the right to give yourself permission to opt out. You get to decide. If you're spending the day alone, take care of you. Spend time doing what you enjoy. Consider journal writing, read a good book or pull out an old hobby like crafts or a puzzle, anything that you enjoy. It's okay to opt out of holidays when you need to. Sometimes it seems impossible to "count our blessings" when life can be so hard. As the author Megan Devine says, "It's Ok that you're not Ok."
