What do you do when things don't work out the way you'd like them to? It's easy to get frustrated and throw in the towel. When we do that, our self-talk can turn negative quickly. We begin to tell ourselves things like "Nothing ever goes the way I want it to" or "It must be me, maybe there is something wrong with me." Our insecurities quickly rise to the surface when we feel like we can't catch a break. Rest assured that everyone feels this way from time to time. When we get stuck in a negative pattern of thinking after being faced with a challenge, our mindset tends to turn rigid. It can cause us to feel like we are stuck. Our ability to think rationally, problem solve and identify practical solutions becomes diminished. It's important to remember that it is common for things to not always go the way people want them to. We all face obstacles from time to time.
Being flexible with our thinking can help us turn obstacles into challenges. Sometimes having a growth mindset means that we are willing to try new things. To think outside of the box. Finding ways to overcome challenges requires persistence, determination and a "can do" attitude. When we truly believe we are capable of overcoming obstacles, our actions begin to line up with those beliefs. Rather than ruminating over all the negative things we feel, it becomes easier to quickly move into action and change our mindset. I firmly believe that one of the biggest factors that determines our success in life is the belief in ourselves and our abilities. As Henry Ford said, "Whether you think you can or think you can't, you're right." Instead of being stuck in our thinking, we can move into activities that will support our hopes and our dreams. Most significant goals require hard work and effort. When we achieve goals that are easily attainable, it usually does not bring the same kind of satisfaction as goals that require time, energy and persistence.
Most of us have a combination of a growth and a fixed mindset when it comes to different areas in our life. Nurturing our growth mindset requires us to realize that everyone makes mistakes. If we were all perfect and all the same this world would be incredibly boring. Some people are naturally better at some things than others. With effort though, we can all learn new things. Having a growth mindset means that we embrace the effort and realize that effort is more important than outcome. Theodore Roosevelt described this concept very well when he said "Nothing in the world is worth having or worth doing unless it means effort, pain, difficulty...I have never in my life envied a human being who led an easy life. I have envied a great many people who led difficult lives and led them well."
If you feel like you are stuck in a rigid, fixed mindset and are not satisfied with your life and your achievements, therapy can help. Together, we can work on identifying your values, exploring obstacles such as depression and anxiety as we set small, manageable goals to improve your motivation and strengthen your mindset. If you need help in this area, Best Life Therapy in Davison, Michigan can help! New clients can schedule your initial appointment on our website.
